"I wanted to know the best of one who holds today undisputed sway over the hearts of millions of mankind ... I became more than convinced that it was not the sword that won a place for Islam in those days in the scheme of life. It was the rigid simplicity, the utter self-effacement of the Prophet, the scrupulous regard for his pledges, his intense devotion to his friends and followers, his intrepidity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in God and in his own mission. These and not the sword carried everything before them and surmounted every obstacle. When I closed the 2nd volume (of the prophet's biography), I was sorry there was not more for me to read of the great life."

and yet he outcast his son when his son converted to Islam (who converted back to his old religion because of an incident, not caused by mahatma though)
hmm, interesting, never thought gandhi would do something like that, appreciate some prove though....
u can start at wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harilal_Gandhi just for a general understanding, then move on to more reliable sources like history books and biographies.
but take note, it is one issue that is not widely discussed due to sensitivities, so it may be hard to find a more thorough discussion on the matter
wikipedia has provided external link to the link above which contains gandhi's opinion about his son's conversion, http://www.hvk.org/hvk/articles/0103/354.html. from the writing i can deduct that he did not oppose islam/muslim, he just did not believe that the act of conversion came from the heart.
nevermind what happened, doesn't change the fact that his quote about our prophet is trully touching.
